Tsavo National Park, one of Kenya’s oldest and largest parks, holds a fascinating history that dates back to 1948 when it was officially established. Divided into Tsavo East and Tsavo West by the Nairobi-Mombasa railway and highway, the park covers an expansive area of over 22,000 square kilometers. This division not only facilitates easier management but also allows visitors to explore distinct characteristics and attractions within each section. Tsavo East, renowned for its vast open savannahs and striking red soil, and Tsavo West, with its rugged landscapes and rich biodiversity, together form a crucial part of Kenya’s natural heritage.
The historical significance of Tsavo extends beyond its establishment as a national park. The region is famously known for the “Man-Eaters of Tsavo,” a pair of lions that terrorized railway workers in the late 19th century during the construction of the Kenya-Uganda railway.
These events captured the imagination of the world and were later immortalized in books and films. The unsettling yet intriguing story of these lions adds a layer of mystique to the park, drawing history enthusiasts and wildlife lovers alike to the area. Moreover, Tsavo National Park plays a vital role in Kenya’s conservation efforts. It serves as a sanctuary for numerous endangered species and a critical wildlife corridor connecting the country’s diverse ecosystems. The park’s establishment marked a significant step in preserving Kenya’s natural landscapes and protecting its wildlife from poaching and habitat destruction. Through ongoing conservation programs, Tsavo continues to be a beacon of hope for the future of Kenya’s wildlife.
Our 8-day Wild Beach Experience combines the best of both worlds in Kenya!
The vast expanses of Tsavo National Park are a sanctuary for a remarkable variety of flora and fauna, each contributing to the park’s rich and diverse ecosystem. The unique red soil of Tsavo, composed of iron oxide, gives the park its distinctive appearance and supports a variety of plant life. Acacia trees, baobabs, and doum palms dot the landscape, providing essential food and shelter for the park’s inhabitants. These resilient plants have adapted to the arid conditions, and their presence sustains the complex web of life in Tsavo.
Among the park’s most celebrated residents are the “red elephants” of Tsavo, so named because of their habit of dust bathing in the red soil, giving them a distinctive reddish hue. These majestic creatures roam the park in large herds, their presence a testament to the success of conservation efforts within the park. Tsavo is also home to other iconic species such as the endangered black rhino, the elusive leopard, and the regal African lion. The park’s diverse habitats, from grasslands to riverine forests, support a wide range of mammals, birds, and reptiles, making it a prime destination for wildlife enthusiasts.
Birdwatchers will find Tsavo a paradise with over 500 bird species recorded within its boundaries. From the vibrant Lilac-breasted Roller to the rare Taita Falcon, the park offers endless opportunities for avian observation. The seasonal rivers and permanent waterholes attract a variety of birdlife, providing essential resources for both resident and migratory species. The symphony of bird calls and the sight of colorful plumage amidst the greenery add to the enchanting allure of Tsavo.
Designed to ensure a memorable and inclusive wildlife experience for all. Explore without limits.
Tsavo National Park offers unique experiences throughout the year, but the best time to visit depends on what you hope to see and do. The park experiences two main seasons: the dry season and the wet season, each offering different advantages for visitors. Understanding these seasonal variations can help you plan an optimal visit.
The dry season, from June to October, is generally considered the best time for wildlife viewing. During these months, the vegetation is sparse, making it easier to spot animals as they congregate around water sources. The clear skies and pleasant temperatures also make this an ideal time for photography, with the golden hues of the savannah providing a stunning backdrop. This season coincides with the migration of elephants, offering a unique opportunity to witness these majestic creatures in large numbers.
The wet season, from November to May, brings lush greenery and a burst of life to the park. While wildlife may be more dispersed due to the abundance of water, this season is perfect for birdwatching as migratory birds arrive in large numbers. The landscape transforms into a verdant paradise, and the presence of newborn animals adds an extra layer of excitement. The rains, usually in the form of short afternoon showers, also bring fewer tourists, offering a more tranquil and intimate experience. Regardless of the season, early mornings and late afternoons are the best times for game drives, as wildlife is more active during these cooler parts of the day.

Steve R2025-09-03Verified Could not have been better!! We arrived in Nairobi confused and not really sure what to expect but were met at the airport by Eunice who had organised a driver to take us to our accommodation and proceeded over the next day until we stated our Safari to assist us better than we could ever have hoped. Eunice got us to our Yellow Fever injections, which were a fraction of the cost in the UK, helped us occupy our day in Nairobi and, most importantly, organised our Safari guide for Kenya, John who was incredible. The only mistake we made was organising our accommodation in Nairobi as Eunice would have definitely found us something much better! Our Africa experience could not have got off to a better start and that was thanks to Eunice and Umani Bliss Safari's and we could not be more grateful. dionne e2025-08-28Verified Loved the Motherland!! First of all, the host is really great. We were an hour and a half away from the meet up spot and she helped me arrange a ride in Diani. Once there the driver explained the whole history of all the sites along the way. It was very very enlightening and taught us about the culture. So I read the reviews myself before booking. i was kind of leery because it said I wouldn't see dolphins. I didn't but I understand. It's not like it's a contained space you're literally out in the ocean. It's actually a marina park where you hope to see dolphins. And there's so many boats they probably scare them away. But overall, the excursion was good. I'd get on a bigger boat next time my husband got seasick, but we had the boat ride although the waters were chilly there was great because Unfortunately, the boat ride was somewhat choppy. My husband got seasick. But I enjoyed the snorkeling. One person elected to go diving she had never been in the guy who taught her and went out with her was excellent. The guide on our boat was excellent. Helped everybody in the water when snorkeling he helped take pictures of me. Overall it was a good experience. I will say don't pay for the shrimp and crab when you get on the island there itty-bitty. But the island folks are very Welcoming. The food was pretty good. Be careful going back down to the boat. Make sure to wear water shoes.
