The Great Migration Route

A Majestic Clockwise Journey.

The Great Migration, one of nature’s most spectacular phenomena, is a continuous, year-long journey of over 1.5 million wildebeest, accompanied by hundreds of thousands of zebras, gazelles, and other herbivores, in a vast, clockwise direction through the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem of Tanzania and Kenya. This relentless trek is primarily driven by the search for fresh grazing and water, dictated by the seasonal rains.

The migration is not a single, linear movement but rather a fluid and cyclical procession with various stages throughout the year. The general directional flow can be broken down as follows:

The Great Migration Route Breakdown.

January - March

Calving Season in the South.

The journey begins for many in the southern Serengeti plains of Tanzania, near the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Here, during the short rainy season, the nutrient-rich grasses provide the ideal conditions for the calving season. Hundreds of thousands of wildebeest are born within a few weeks, attracting a high concentration of predators.

April - June

The Northbound Trek Begins
As the southern plains dry up, the herds begin their long journey, moving in a northwesterly direction. They traverse the central Serengeti, with some heading towards the Western Corridor and the Grumeti River. The herds start to congregate, forming massive columns that can stretch for miles. The Grumeti River presents their first significant obstacle, with its resident crocodiles posing a serious threat.

July - October

Dramatic River Crossing In Masai Mara
Continuing their northward push, the migration reaches the northern Serengeti and the formidable Mara River. The dramatic and perilous river crossings into Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve are a hallmark of this period. The herds will cross the river multiple times, following the localized rainfall and a primal instinct for greener pastures on the other side. This is often the most sought-after spectacle for wildlife enthusiasts.

The Return Journey. November - December Southbound Migration Begins

Following the short rains in Kenya, the wildebeest and their companions begin their southward journey. They move from the Masai Mara back into Tanzania, heading towards the eastern and southern Serengeti. By December, they are typically spread across the eastern and southern reaches, ready to begin the cycle anew as the calving season approaches.

In essence, the Great Migration is a perpetual, circular movement dictated by the rhythm of the seasons. While the precise timing and route can vary slightly from year to year depending on rainfall patterns, the overall direction remains a consistent and awe-inspiring clockwise pilgrimage across the vast East African plains.
